Lurchers and Greyhounds

"They are dogs and yet so much more than just dogs:  they are graceful, silent sons and daughters of the elements, ethereal, mysterious, spiritual."  - Jackie Drakeford in her book, The House Lurcher

My love of and interest in sighthounds goes back a long way.  From living with an Afghan Hound as a child, to looking after retired racing greyhounds when I worked in boarding kennels 25 years ago, to the present day where I share my life with two lurchers.  They are my friends and my inspiration.

If you commission a portrait and mention your favourite sighthound rescue at the same time, I will donate 10% of profits to that rescue.

If you are interested in sharing your life with a lurcher or greyhound, there are various organisations around the country who can help you to find the right dog for your circumstances.  Here are some that I can recommend.

One of my lurchers was adopted from Lurcher Link which is a Yorkshire based organisation that rescues and rehomes lurchers throughout the UK.

The Sighthound Welfare Trust supports various sighthound rescues and is a good source of information, with up-to-date lists of dogs in need of homes.

Bristol DAWG is the UK branch of the Cork Dog Action Welfare Group.  They are totally committed to helping abandoned and abused Irish dogs find loving homes in the UK.

There are many other rescues around the country that have lurchers and greyhounds waiting for good, permanent homes.  A quick Google search should help you to find a rescue local to you.
